钻具稳定器是井眼导向井下钻具组合最基本的组件之一。在钻斜井和水平井中，由于工艺上要求稳定器的外径与钻头尺寸相等或小1~2毫米，稳定器与井壁间隙太小，故在起下钻柱过程中，稳定器容易遇阻发生卡钻井下事故。
可变径稳定器解决了其它稳定器在钻井工作中的缺点。在定向井钻进过程中，利用钻柱内外钻井液循环过程中在喷嘴处产生的压差，使稳定器支承头伸出而达到满眼，从而保证稳定器在定向井中不同钻具组合所达到增斜、稳斜的目的要求.同时，由于停泵后支承头收回，稳定器外径变小，有利起下钻顺利进行。
Stabilizer is one of main drill tool assembly in hole guiding. During drilling in deviating and horizontal well , in view of workmanship, stabilizer OD is required to be equal or 1~2mm less than drill bit so that too small clearance between borehole wall and stabilizer usually causes stabilizer to be easily stuck during tripping out of hole.
However, variable diameter stabilizer solves the problem which common stabilizer can not solves. During drilling in directional well, by use of differential pressure at nozzle produced by circulation of fluid among inside and outside of drill string, stabilizer stretch out supporting head to reach full hole so that stabilizer equipped with different drill tools to increase or angle drop or stabilize hole inclination. Meanwhile, when stop pump circulation, support head draws back so that stabilizer OD becomes small to improve tripping out smoothly.
